029 - FEAR HIS SELF-RIGHTEOUS EMONESS

You know what?

I really do not understand this place.

I don't understand how people can get murdered-- horribly, brutally, blood painted all over the walls-- and nobody even bats an eye after a day has passed. It's like you've all got the memories of bloody goldfish here! Somebody gets killed, and it's one quick request to the 'Admiral,' a bit of time spent in time out for the criminal, and suddenly everything's hunky dory for you people, and it's back to talking about presents and whinging about how bored you are. And I'm not much better.

Is there a reset button I don't know about?

Where are the consequences? What's the point of all this if we can't even CHANGE anything around here?

In another week, somebody else will be injured, murdered, mutilated, whatever, and you'll all be upset for a day, then go play a game of Trivial Pursuit.

This. Is. Pointless.

[OOC: Why the sudden rant from Sam? He's just feeling extremely guilty over Prefect's death (AND ALL THE OTHERS) and his inability to do much of anything at all to impact the SYSSSTEMMM here. AND HE'S BEEN MOPING AROUND HIS FLAT LOOKING AT THE CIGARETTE CARD FROM HIS DAD :C He misses many people.]

Yeah, make Reid feel guilty, why don't you

...

And Reid likes Trivial Pursuit. HE JUST DIDN'T WANT TO DWELL ON THE DYING

Best not to get all worked up over it, Mister.

And look, I just keep spamming you! Aren't you lucky?

...sometimes death is supposed to happen, Sam. Sometimes it's better to accept it.

Death happens. It shouldn't happen and people should care about it. Nobody needs to die in vain, and I agree entirely, but I don't think everyone's as freely vocal about it as you.

I give you credit. This needed to be said.

It's wrong, yes, but...sometimes we don't have any control over it. We're not in any position of power. We can only try to help the culprits change their ways.

I just wish I could do more in that vein...but I don't think it's possible.

I do agree that it feels almost perverted the way we move on sometimes. But when your Inmate is hurt, once it's taken care of, what are they going to need more from their Warden? If we can't be calm, how can we expect them to be?

And I would like to see a better system put into place to deal with Inmates that harm other Inmates. But think about what this place is. Back in our worlds, when a person kills and the law brings them in, they're imprisoned, they're executed, and then it's done with. That's how it's handled there.

But here is where they wind up.

So the issue is -- aside from doing our jobs, and pursuing reformation -- no matter what we choose to do -- whether it's send them to level zero or whatever -- the outcome is going to continue to be completely circular until that Inmate changes.

Our consequences are minimal, this is true. So maybe the steps that need taken are those that would prevent such incidents from occurring. More monitoring on the Inmates, more rules (or any at all) set in place. A ranking system could be set in place with the Inmates organized based on who we perceive to be the most dangerous. This could be based on incidents on the Barge, their personalities, or what have you.

Gods you need to get laid. You're so uptight about everything.

Besides, murder is fun! It's a lot better than whatever this 'Trivial Pursuit' is.

Libby is keeping her outrage in check! As usual! :D

It's not fun if you're the one being murdered.

Riiiight.

whatweoncewere: (thinking cap on)

[personal profile] whatweoncewere 2009-01-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This isn't pointless. Don't give up.

Inmates don't need consequences, they need help, and we can't do that by simply forcing them to accept our worldview. They need to understand why actions have consequences, not just that they do.

[identity profile] thatlibbychick.livejournal.com 2009-01-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a question of consequences...at least, that's not why I think the rank system is a good idea. But knowing which inmates pose the biggest risk to everyone else here would be beneficial. It can help keep everyone safe, if we can anticipate who needs the most watching.

I'm willing to give as much help as I can. But gradual redemption won't help keep everyone safe right now. We need to be as vigilant as possible.

Word. Life is pointless. I used to think it had a point - a weird, slightly creepy point, but a point nonetheless. But now the truth has been revealed.
